Gestational Diabetes

Gestational Diabetes can occur in pregnancy due to a process of insulin resistance that occurs in every pregnancy
- it is manageable with diet and/or medication either orally or by injection

In your pregnancy you will do a 1 hr glucose test at 28 weeks but may do one sooner if you have a family or personal history of diabetes  - you may need to do a 2 hr fasting test or two however it will depend on what happens in your pregnancy.

If you test positive for diabetes in these tests your midwife will refer you to the diabetic team at the hospital who will see you during your pregnancy and help you manage the diabetes in pregnancy.

Gestational diabetes goes away after the birth of the baby but those who develop this condition are at greater risk or developing it again in further pregnancies or later in life.
