Medications and Supplements
Please ensure that any medical professional giving you medication is aware that you are pregnant so they can prescribe the most effective safe treatment available for you at this time.
IODINE:
Iodine is essential for normal growth and development, especially the baby’s brain. It is recommended by the Ministry of Health that women take 150mcg of Iodine once a day during pregnancy and breastfeeding to ensure good levels are obtained.
IRON:
Iron is essential for your body. When eating try to include servings of lean meat, chicken, fish, legumes or nuts, whole grain breads, cereals and leafy green vegetables. Some pregnancies require an Iron supplement. If this is the case you will be given Vitamin C to take with the Iron to help it absorb into your body.
(It is important not to take Iron supplements when having caffeine or calcium. Please choose a time of the day when you do not have tea, coffee, milo or soft drinks and milk products like dairy etc)
GENERAL MULTIVITAMINS:
Please avoid multivitamins with High Levels of Vitamin A as this can cause birth defects. Pregnancy related vitamins are the best during pregnancy.
Elevit and Blackmores pregnancy vitamins contain correct amounts of the supplements needed pre and during pregnancy
