Morning Sickness
This can be a common pregnancy complaint in the first trimester. Once the placenta takes over the management of the pregnancy around 12 weeks the hormones which have caused the nausea and vomiting usually settle down and these symptoms can disappear.
In some cases it is severe and causes dehydration in which case you may need rehydrating in the hospital. (Hyperemisis www.hyperemesis.org)
Try some of the following tips to help alleviate the nausea and vomiting:
· Ginger ale or grated ginger tea
· Small amounts of food often so the stomach is never empty
· Sucking on ice blocks
· Taking sips of water or watered down isotonic drinks
· Eating something dry before getting out of bed
Acupressure and Acupuncture can be a really effective way to manage nausea. Please see a local acupuncturist for advise
B6 (supplement from the chemist)
There are prescription medicines like metaclopromide and ondansetron that can be used but we will usually only suggest them if you are unable to keep food and fluid down
Please contact your midwife if you are concerned
